Our verdict on fibergen

fibergen is an open-source FFT-based homogenization tool for computational material analysis, aimed at materials researchers studying effective behavior across heterogeneous structures. Its Lippmann–Schwinger staggered-grid approach covers linear elasticity, large deformation, Stokes flow, and heat equations. Researchers who need these homogenization domains, rather than a general-purpose simulation environment, are the natural audience.

Its scope extends beyond the core solvers: mixed boundary conditions, laminate mixing for interfaces, fiber-distribution generation, tetrahedral mesh geometry, and raw gzip-compressed CT-data input support different material representations and boundary setups. Homogenized material-parameter identification is also included. That makes fibergen relevant to workflows that connect microstructural inputs with effective material properties, though it remains focused on homogenization rather than a wide range of simulation tasks.

The project is GPL-3.0 open source and provides XML and Python scripting interfaces. It is implemented in C++ with OpenMP; the project is developed primarily for Linux and can also be built in Docker. The website says Linux was developed and tested, while Windows and macOS may work with adjustments. Documentation and community are the listed support channels. Choose fibergen if its homogenization methods and Linux-centered workflow fit your research; look elsewhere if you need broad simulation coverage or a platform that works without operating-system adjustments.
