Our verdict on Fauna
For nature enthusiasts who want to identify more than one kind of organism, Fauna turns photos into species suggestions and profiles. It covers animals, plants, insects, and fungi, and can show a confidence score alongside other possible matches. The app is for iPhone and iPad, with finds saved to a field journal and sorted into personal collections or ecosystem chains. That makes it a fit for people who want to build a record of observations as well as get an identification, rather than use a narrowly focused plant or bird identifier.
The identification flow is supported by species information that can include habitat, diet, conservation status, and safety details. Multiple images of a subject are supported, and users can explore nearby species and biodiversity. Collections add a way to organize discoveries, while badges and ranks provide progress markers as collections grow. The published features make Fauna broader than a simple photo lookup, though species profiles and suggestions should be treated as reference information rather than a substitute for expert guidance on safety-sensitive decisions.
Fauna has a free tier with limited daily scans and starter collections. Fauna Pro (Monthly) adds unlimited scans, camera-roll photo imports, and a new premium collection each month; an Explorer Pack permanently unlocks one premium collection. The app is currently available for iPhone and iPad, so Android users should look elsewhere. Choose Fauna if broad coverage and a growing field journal matter more than cross-platform access. It is less suitable for someone who needs unrestricted scans without a paid option or wants a standalone identification tool without collection features.
