Our verdict on fastpages

fastpages is an open-source blogging platform built around Jekyll, GitHub Actions, and GitHub Pages. It is designed for solo publishers and small teams whose content begins in Jupyter Notebooks, Markdown files, or Microsoft Word documents. Its central workflow converts those formats into blog posts while retaining technical publishing features such as code outputs, interactive Altair visualizations, comments through GitHub Issues, keyword search, tags, categories, RSS, and pagination. It supports web and self-hosted use, with cloud and self-hosted deployment options, custom domains, analytics, custom styling, and local live-reload previews.

The platform fits a GitHub- and notebook-centered ecosystem. Integrations include GitHub Actions, GitHub Pages, Jupyter Notebooks, Google Colab, Binder, Deepnote, Utterances, Google Analytics, and Microsoft Word. This combination makes fastpages useful when writing, version control, automated publishing, and technical demonstrations need to sit in the same workflow. Hiding or collapsing notebook code input and output also lets publishers decide how much implementation detail appears in a post. Readers can encounter interactive visualizations, while publishers can organize content with tags, categories, search, feeds, and pagination.

Project status is the decisive consideration. fastpages is deprecated, and its repository was archived on November 13, 2022; maintainers recommend Quarto instead. That makes it a poor fit for a new publishing project seeking an active foundation or broader editorial development. Publishers with an existing fastpages workflow may still value its focused conversion tools and GitHub integrations, but new users should choose an alternative for ongoing development. It is most appropriate as a specialized reference point for notebook-driven technical blogs rather than as a current general-purpose blogging platform.
