Fastly Fanout is a managed edge publish/subscribe service for applications that need to keep client connections open and deliver live updates. It is aimed at teams building chat, live feeds, notifications, and IoT messaging, particularly at mid-market and enterprise organizations. Rather than requiring an origin server to maintain every connection, Fanout manages persistent connections and distributes messages to subscribers on active channels. It supports WebSocket and HTTP-based streaming patterns, with client libraries for Rust, JavaScript, and Go.

Its protocol range is a central consideration for teams with varied clients or backends. Fanout supports WebSockets, Server-Sent Events, and HTTP long polling, and can translate between client streams and HTTP backends. It works with external origins or Fastly services, including serverless backends, and supports MQTT application architectures. Local development testing with Pushpin is also supported. This breadth makes it relevant when an application needs several delivery methods or a bridge between persistent client connections and existing HTTP services. Teams seeking only a narrow WebSocket endpoint may find this edge-managed approach broader than they need.

Fanout is a paid optional upgrade, and Fastly directs customers to sales for pricing. A 30-day trial is available, but it requires an existing paid Fastly account with a Compute service, so it is not a standalone way to evaluate the product. The service is cloud-managed and available for Fastly Compute services; self-hosting is not an option. Choose Fanout if edge-managed connection handling, pub/sub distribution, and protocol translation fit an existing Fastly setup. Teams that need self-hosting, independent trial access, or pricing they can review without contacting sales should consider alternatives.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires a paid Fastly account with a Compute service for the trial

    • Fanout is a managed cloud service, not a self-hosted deployment
