Fastly Compute review
A production-focused edge runtime with streaming, broad language support, and usage-based pricing.

Fastly Compute is a globally distributed serverless platform for running application logic, APIs, authentication layers, and edge functions close to end users. It is aimed at teams building latency-sensitive applications such as personalization, request routing, API acceleration, security enforcement, and real-time processing. WebAssembly-based isolated execution environments provide the runtime, while support for Rust, JavaScript, Go, C++, Python, and other WASI-supporting languages gives teams several implementation options.
Pricing is usage-based rather than organized around a conventional fixed monthly subscription. The Free tier provides usage-based access to Compute. The Compute Requests plan charges $0.5 per 1 million compute requests per month, while Compute vCPU Milliseconds charges $0.05 per 1 million compute vCPU milliseconds per month. These request and vCPU-based options let teams align billing with different measures of execution, but they also make usage tracking an important part of planning. The published plans show a free allowance alongside separate request and compute-time charges.
Fastly Compute fits development workflows that already use automation and infrastructure as code. Deployment is available through the Fastly CLI, Fastly control panel, GitHub Actions, Terraform, and APIs. Real-time log streaming and execution metrics support operational visibility, while edge data integrations such as KV Store extend the platform beyond request handling. Streaming bodies and global deployment across Fastly points of presence are particularly relevant for edge-native applications and APIs. Choose Fastly Compute when WebAssembly execution, global edge placement, streaming, and CI/CD integration are priorities. Teams seeking a simple fixed-price serverless plan or a runtime outside WebAssembly and WASI support should consider another approach.
Fastly Compute pros and cons
- Where it wins
- WebAssembly isolation with Rust, JavaScript, Go, C++, and Python support
- Streaming request and response bodies for edge-native applications
- Fastly CLI, Terraform, GitHub Actions, logs, metrics, and KV Store integration
- Where it doesn't
- Usage-based billing can require separate request and vCPU tracking
- Runtime support depends on WebAssembly and WASI-compatible languages
- Designed for edge execution rather than a conventional fixed monthly plan
