Our verdict on farmOS

farmOS is a web-based application for agricultural management, planning, and record keeping, developed by the farmOS community. It is aimed at farms that want to manage crop and livestock records together, with a particular fit for budget-conscious mixed farms and developers who value open-source software. Records are organized as assets, logs, quantities, plans, and related data, giving the system a record-centered approach rather than a narrow focus on one farm operation.

Mapping is a core part of the product’s scope: farmOS can represent locations as points, lines, polygons, and circles, and arrange them in hierarchies. It imports geometry files in KML, KMZ, GPX, and GeoJSON formats. Logs can capture farm activities and events, while log quantities support tracking inventory changes over time. Together, these tools suit farms that need a shared map and ongoing record history across crops, livestock, and inventory. The tradeoff is that farmOS offers a broad management foundation, not a specialized operational feature set; farms seeking deeper purpose-built workflows or more integrations may prefer another system.

The software is free and open source, and can be self-hosted or accessed through subscription hosting from Farmier, where hosting may be paid separately. Its JSON:API lets other applications read and write farm records, which is useful for developers and organizations connecting farm data to other systems. Mobile offline support is described through Field Kit’s Progressive Web App; the former native apps are no longer regularly maintained. Documentation and community support are the listed support channels. Choose farmOS if control over records, mapping, and deployment options matter more than turnkey specialization; look elsewhere if maintained native apps or highly specialized workflows are central requirements.
