FalkorDB review
A flexible graph database for teams combining connected data with vector retrieval.

FalkorDB is a Redis-based property graph database for developers and teams working with interconnected data. Its model uses nodes, relationships, labels, and properties, with OpenCypher for querying and proprietary extensions for additional capabilities. A free plan is available, and deployment can be self-hosted with Docker, Docker Compose, or Kubernetes, or handled through a managed cloud service. It is suited to applications that need graph traversals, semantic relationships, and vector retrieval in the same data platform.
Its strongest area is the combination of graph and AI retrieval features. FalkorDB provides full-text, range, and vector indexing, including HNSW indexes for vector search. The GraphRAG SDK supports knowledge-graph construction, hybrid retrieval, cited answers, incremental document updates, and connections to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini. Built-in algorithms include breadth-first search and harmonic centrality, while multi-graph and multi-tenancy support help separate workloads or datasets.
FalkorDB also offers a broad integration and deployment surface. Official client libraries cover Python, Node.js, Java, Rust, Go, PHP, and C#, with support for AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure environments. Replication and cluster deployment extend its fit for distributed architectures. The tradeoff is that teams must choose between several operating models and account for proprietary OpenCypher extensions when portability matters. Choose FalkorDB for open-source graph applications, GraphRAG pipelines, and vector-enabled Cypher. Consider a different platform if standardized query behavior or a narrower operational model is the priority.
FalkorDB pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Open-source property graphs with OpenCypher and graph algorithms
- HNSW vector search alongside full-text and range indexing
- Deployable with Docker, Kubernetes, or managed cloud options
- Where it doesn't
- OpenCypher includes proprietary extensions alongside the standard language
- Multiple deployment models require architecture and operations decisions
- GraphRAG workflows add a specialized SDK to the learning curve
