FACT review
A focused static-analysis tool for firmware inventory and vulnerability triage.

FACT, the Firmware Analysis and Comparison Tool, automates static security analysis of firmware images for routers, IoT devices, UEFI systems, webcams, drones, and other embedded platforms. It is suited to security teams and researchers that need to inventory firmware contents, identify embedded software, and triage known vulnerabilities. Its web interface supports browsing, searching, comparing, and visualizing firmware contents and analysis results.
The tool covers the main stages of firmware review in one workflow. It extracts and unpacks firmware images, identifies software, operating systems, services, versions, and CPU architectures, and performs known-vulnerability and CVE lookup. Credential and cryptographic-material detection adds another useful inspection layer, while firmware and file comparison helps identify changes between images. Results are searchable in a firmware and analysis-result database. FACT also provides a REST API and plugin-based extensibility, with radare2 listed as an integration. Published platform support includes Debian, Ubuntu, and Kali Linux, with web, Linux, API, and self-hosted deployment options.
FACT is strongest when firmware inventory and static triage are the priority, particularly for embedded-device research and repeatable analysis workflows. The published category specifications do not identify a decompiler, so it is not the right fit for teams whose primary requirement is interactive decompilation. It is also maintained as a research prototype, and the vendor warns that its web interface is not hardened for public internet exposure. The Dockerized version is currently unmaintained, which makes deployment planning important. Choose FACT for its broad firmware-analysis workflow, searchable results, comparison features, and extension points; choose another tool when decompilation, a hardened public-facing interface, or maintained Docker deployment is essential.
FACT pros and cons
- Where it wins

- Detects credentials and cryptographic material alongside known CVEs
- Offers comparison, searchable results, visualization, REST API, and plugins
- Where it doesn't
- Maintained as a research prototype
- Web interface is not hardened for public internet exposure
- Dockerized version is currently unmaintained
