eXist-db review
A focused, self-hosted choice for XML-centric applications and services.

eXist-db is an open-source NoSQL document database and application platform built for developers and organizations creating XML-centric applications and services. It stores XML and binary resources in a schema-less database, supports XQuery-based querying and updates, and runs as a stand-alone server, in a servlet context, embedded in a Java application, or through Docker. Its free, self-hosted model suits teams that want control over deployment and an XML-native foundation rather than a vendor-operated service.
Its strongest area is the depth of its XML feature set. Native XML storage is paired with XQuery, full-text, n-gram, range, and Lucene indexing, while transactions support application workflows. The platform also exposes REST-style HTTP, XML-RPC, WebDAV, and XML:DB interfaces. A browser-based IDE for application artifacts and application package installation extend it beyond storage into application development. Official Docker images provide another deployment path, alongside the stand-alone, servlet, and embedded options.
The trade-off is a deliberately narrow focus and a self-managed operating model. eXist-db is a strong fit when XML documents, XQuery, and XML-oriented access patterns are central to the application. Teams looking for a general-purpose document database with verified vector search or a managed-cloud deployment should choose an alternative. For organizations comfortable managing their own infrastructure, eXist-db combines free open-source distribution with native XML capabilities and multiple integration interfaces.
