Our verdict on Exim

Exim is a free, open-source message transfer agent for administrators building self-hosted mail infrastructure. It receives and delivers messages through SMTP, supports LMTP and local delivery, and runs on Unix-like systems, including GNU/Linux and Darwin-based environments. Cygwin support extends its configuration to Windows. Exim is intended for message transfer and delivery rather than for users seeking a hosted mailbox, webmail interface, or mobile mail service.

Its main strength is control over the mail path. Administrators can define routing and transports, manage queues and retry processing, enforce SMTP policies with access-control lists, and apply user or system mail filtering. Exim also provides interfaces for external virus and spam scanners, along with TLS-encrypted SMTP connections. This combination suits deployments where delivery behavior, policy enforcement, and integration with surrounding mail infrastructure matter more than a packaged user-facing experience.

Exim should be shortlisted when the priority is a configurable MTA that can be adapted to specific routing and delivery requirements. It should not be the first choice for a complete mailbox platform: its published role does not include webmail, IMAP or POP3 access, mobile synchronization, mailbox quotas, or high-availability clustering. Teams choosing Exim should plan to manage the mail server, configuration files, filtering, policy controls, and delivery operations themselves. For mail administrators who want open-source control over SMTP and routing, it is a focused fit; organizations seeking an all-in-one mailbox environment should choose a broader platform.
