Our verdict on Essay
Essay is a structured writing platform for students, academics, researchers, and other writers who need more than a blank document. Its workflow moves from AI topic selection and refinement through outlining, drafting, sentence rewriting, reordering, notes, references, citations, feedback, and export. Notes can be linked to essays, outlines, and sentences, while sharing and commenting support collaborative review. It is available on the web and iOS, making it a fit for users who want research organization and essay production in the same product.
The free plan provides 3 essays, a 5,000-word count, 12 notes, core writing actions, and export to PDF, Word, Google Docs, and Markdown. Core costs $8 per month with annual billing and adds unlimited essays and word count, auto-formatted citations and footnotes, reference and source management, and Zotero integration. Pro costs $12 per month with annual billing and lists the same published capabilities as Core, including unlimited essays and word count, citation tools, reference management, Zotero integration, and the same export formats. The paid tiers therefore suit users who need sustained academic work rather than occasional drafting.
Its strongest distinction is the connection between source-based writing and document structure. A reference library, Zotero import, in-text citations, footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies address common academic-writing tasks, while linked notes keep research connected to the developing essay. Exports to Word, Google Docs, PDF, and Markdown also support work beyond the platform. Essay should appeal to students who want a complete workflow from topic to submission-ready document. Writers who only need basic drafting, or who do not need citations, source management, or structured research, may find the broader workflow unnecessary.
