ER/Studio Data Architect review
A broad modeling and lineage suite for teams that need governance beyond documentation.

ER/Studio Data Architect is a Windows data modeling application for individual professionals and small teams. It supports conceptual, logical, and physical models, forward and reverse engineering, schema comparison, merge operations, ALTER script generation, local data dictionaries, JSON schema modeling, automation macros, lineage, impact analysis, version management, and multiple reporting formats. Its coverage spans SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Databricks, Snowflake, MongoDB, and other relational, warehouse, and NoSQL platforms. The product is best suited to enterprise modelers who need documentation connected to governance and change analysis rather than a narrowly focused database documentation tool.
The product is offered through three plan levels. ER/Studio Data Architect includes a workstation license and multi-platform capability. ER/Studio Data Architect Pro adds collaboration and change management, while ER/Studio Enterprise adds enterprise collaboration, business glossaries, and metadata governance. A 14-day free trial is available, but there is no free plan. The plan structure makes the product relevant to teams that need to expand from individual modeling into shared governance workflows.
Its strongest fit comes from the breadth of its modeling and metadata capabilities. Data lineage, impact analysis, schema history, reporting, dictionaries, naming standards, and integrations with Git and identity systems such as Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, and LDAP support structured operating practices. SSO and self-hosted deployment also fit organizations with controlled environments. However, teams seeking simple documentation may find the scope and paid positioning excessive. The standard edition is intended for standalone projects, and the Windows-centered experience may not suit teams seeking a browser-first or broadly cross-platform workflow. Choose it for multi-model governance and lineage; choose an alternative for lightweight documentation alone.
