Entropy is a desktop application from Ergohaven for configuring programmable keyboards and related input devices with Vial-QMK or Vial-RMK interfaces. It is aimed at solo users and small teams working with compatible keyboards, macropads, trackballs, touchpads, encoders, and modular devices. The application supports Linux, Windows, and macOS, with compatible devices connecting over USB or Bluetooth. Its focus is keyboard layouts and input-device configuration rather than broad mouse customization.

Entropy is distributed as free, open-source GPL-3.0 software. Its configuration scope includes layout and layer editing, key assignment, keycode selection, visual macro, combo, and tap-dance configuration, plus RGB and layer LED controls. Users can import and export device layouts and images or PDFs. The software also includes a Matrix Tester, Layout Indicator, local text expansion, and a Typing Trainer with local result history. Live synchronization covers time, volume, media, and operating-system layout settings.

The main qualification is hardware and firmware compatibility. Available controls depend on the connected device’s firmware, so the full feature set is not universal across every keyboard or input device. Entropy is also desktop software, with no mobile deployment listed. It suits users who want detailed, open-source keyboard layout work, macros, lighting controls, testing, and typing tools across three operating systems. Users seeking a broader, mouse-first customization suite may prefer a different category fit.

Entropy pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Layer, keycode, macro, combo, and tap-dance editing
    • RGB, pointing-device, mouse-key, and firmware settings
    • Cross-platform typing, testing, text expansion, and layout tools
  • Where it doesn't
    • Controls depend on the connected device’s firmware
    • Works with compatible Vial-QMK or Vial-RMK interfaces
    • More keyboard-layout focused than a full mouse suite
