Our verdict on EntoLens
EntoLens is a free iPhone app for identifying insects and other arthropods from a photo or gallery image. It is aimed at nature enthusiasts, gardeners, students, educators, and citizen scientists who want more than a name: results include common and scientific names, taxonomy, and a confidence score. English and Japanese results make it useful for people who want identification details in either language.
The app’s standout strength is the breadth of information attached to an identification. Alongside life stage and danger level, it presents ecological role, habitat, activity, diet, distribution, and seasonality. A similar-species comparison gives users another way to examine close matches, while photography tips support taking useful pictures. Saved identifications form a personal collection and observation history, so EntoLens fits an individual learning or record-keeping workflow better than a collaborative one.
EntoLens is iOS-only and does not support offline identification, so it is a poor fit for field use where connectivity is unavailable or for anyone seeking an Android app. The privacy policy says photos are sent to OpenAI’s API for identification and observation records are stored locally on the device. The app is free, with no paid tiers described. Pick it if you want an accessible insect reference with detailed species facts and are comfortable identifying on an iPhone while online; choose another option if offline access, broader platform availability, or community features matter more.
