Our verdict on Emerald
Emerald is an open-source Minecraft launcher for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is designed for players who manage multiple vanilla or modded profiles and want each instance to have its own folder, Minecraft version, settings, and loader configuration. Support covers Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt, LiteLoader, and Vanilla, while account options include Microsoft, offline, and Ely.by sign-in. The launcher is distributed through GitHub releases under the MIT License.
Its clearest strength is the Modrinth-centered content workflow. Users can browse and install Modrinth mods, shaders, resource packs, and modpacks, or import Modrinth .mrpack files. That focus pairs well with isolated profiles, making it practical to keep different versions and configurations separate. Java management is also unusually detailed for a launcher: Emerald can detect and validate Java runtimes, use custom paths, and select a runtime automatically. These features make it a strong fit for users whose Minecraft setup already revolves around Modrinth.
Operational tools round out the launcher. Emerald captures live game logs, supports search and filtering, surfaces crash reports, and checks for updates at startup. Release, pre-release, and nightly channels give users control over how update-oriented their installation is. The main trade-off is platform and ecosystem fit: macOS builds are not notarized, and the project notes that Linux support has not been tested on real hardware. Users seeking a Modrinth-focused, multi-profile launcher should consider Emerald; those needing a different content ecosystem or more established platform validation should look elsewhere.
