Our verdict on EM-DOSBox

EM-DOSBox is an open-source Emscripten port of DOSBox for running DOS games and other DOS programs in a web browser. Its primary audience is developers packaging legacy software for browser delivery, along with users who can build and serve the generated browser application. The project compiles to JavaScript and WebAssembly and includes browser-oriented packaging tools for turning DOS executables or directories into HTML and data files.

Its strongest area is the range of browser packaging and media options. EM-DOSBox can mount directories, floppy images, CD-ROM images, and hard-drive images. Supported CD-ROM image formats include ISO, CUE/BIN, and CUE/IMG. Gamepad input and CD audio support extend its usefulness for browser-based DOS games, while DOSBox configuration files allow adjustments for speed, audio, and graphics settings. Emscripten Asyncify support is also included for interactive browser use. These capabilities make it a practical fit for projects that need to present DOS software through a web interface rather than a traditional desktop application.

The main trade-off is the build-oriented workflow. EM-DOSBox is distributed as source code under the GNU General Public License, with build instructions and tools intended for people comfortable preparing and serving the resulting web application. It does not present the broader desktop platform coverage of a general-purpose emulator, so it is less suitable for someone seeking a ready-to-run local DOS environment across multiple operating systems. Choose EM-DOSBox when browser compilation, custom packaging, and source availability matter; choose a broader desktop emulator when local installation and wider host-platform support are the priority.
