elbencho is an open-source command-line benchmark for teams measuring storage performance across file systems, object stores and block devices. It reports throughput, IOPS and access latency, making it a fit for storage teams that need workload-specific measurements rather than a broad PC benchmark. Builds are available for Linux and Windows, and macOS compilation is documented. Its scope also includes GPU storage testing with NVIDIA CUDA and GPUDirect Storage.

The feature set is oriented toward controlled, detailed I/O work: elbencho supports multithreaded and asynchronous I/O, live statistics during runs, and data-integrity verification. Distributed service mode lets teams benchmark local and shared storage. Those capabilities make it more relevant to mid-market and enterprise storage evaluation than to casual desktop comparisons. Buyers looking specifically for a graphical benchmark or broad component coverage should consider a different category of tool.

As open-source software under GPL-3.0, elbencho is publicly available without a paid plan structure to compare. Results can be written to CSV or JSON for analysis and charting, and the project provides documentation and email support channels. The combination suits technically equipped teams that can work with a CLI and want output they can process further. Choose it for file, object, block or GPU storage measurement; skip it if the priority is an easy, general-purpose PC score or a GUI-led workflow.

elbencho pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Measures throughput, IOPS and access latency across several storage types
    • Distributed mode supports local and shared storage testing
    • Exports results to CSV or JSON, with live statistics and integrity checks
  • Where it doesn't
    • Focused on storage workloads rather than general PC benchmarking
    • Command-line workflow may not suit buyers seeking a graphical interface
    • GPU storage testing depends on NVIDIA CUDA or GPUDirect Storage
