elan is a free, open-source command-line version manager for Lean, the theorem prover. It is designed for developers who need to manage multiple Lean toolchains across projects without manually handling each installation. A project's lean-toolchain file can specify the required version, allowing elan to select and download that toolchain on demand. It also places the lean and lake binaries on the PATH, making common project commands available through the configured shell environment. Support for Windows, macOS, and Linux makes it suitable for cross-platform Lean development.

Toolchain control is elan's defining strength. Users can install, select, run, and uninstall Lean versions, set a default toolchain, or apply directory-specific overrides. Project pinning and lockfile support help keep a project's toolchain selection consistent, while automatic switching reduces the need to change versions manually between projects. Shell installation and PATH configuration are included in the setup flow, and installation testing can be used in a CI workflow. These capabilities fit teams that want project-level control without adopting a broader, multi-language environment manager.

The trade-off is narrow scope: elan is built around Lean toolchains rather than general development environments or several programming languages. Its interface is command-line based, so teams seeking a graphical management experience may prefer another approach. There are also no AI features. Choose elan when Lean version management, directory overrides, reproducible project selection, and cross-platform or CI usage are the priority. Choose an alternative when one tool must manage a wider language ecosystem or provide a GUI-led workflow.
