Our verdict on ejabberd

ejabberd is an open-source real-time communications server for organizations and developers building messaging, IoT, voice, federation and chat applications. Its Community Server is self-hosted and supports XMPP, MQTT, SIP and Matrix, while the platform also includes REST API access, command-line administration and web administration. Presence, typing indicators, mobile push notifications, message archiving and moderation cover common requirements for managed chat environments.

The plan structure separates self-managed software from commercial support and hosting. Community Server is free forever, licensed under GPLv2, and includes XMPP, MQTT, SIP and Matrix support plus REST, CLI and web administration. Business Edition costs €16,000 per year and adds a 2-node cluster, mobile push at scale, LTS releases and direct ProcessOne support. Fluux costs €200 per month and provides managed SaaS, custom domains, automated upgrades and backups, and production SLAs. Teams comparing the paid tiers should weigh control and administration effort against managed operations or commercial support.

Protocol coverage is the main reason to consider ejabberd over a narrower chat server. It combines XMPP extensions with MQTT 3.1.1 and 5.0, SIP gateway support, WebRTC with STUN/TURN, and Matrix interoperability and federation. Clustering, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis and LDAP support help it fit varied infrastructure, while delivery options include XMPP, WebSocket, BOSH and push notifications across iOS, Android and Web. Choose ejabberd when protocol flexibility, federation or self-hosting matters; a simpler chat project may be better served by a more focused product.
