Ehcache is an open-source Java caching library for application data, database results, and web pages. It is designed for teams building or maintaining Java applications that need to reduce database load, improve application performance, or add cache persistence. The type-safe Java caching API supports direct integration, while JCache compatibility provides a standard API option. Ehcache is self-hosted, available through Maven Central and project downloads, and distributed under the Apache 2.0 license.

Its strongest capability is storage flexibility. Applications can use heap and off-heap tiers, persistent disk storage, or three-tier cache configurations. Cache expiry and eviction settings support control over how entries are managed, while write-through and write-behind cache writers support data-access patterns that connect caching with underlying storage. Terracotta-based clustered caching adds a path for clustered deployments, and the category specifications include data persistence and high availability. These options make Ehcache suitable when a cache needs to be more than a short-lived in-memory layer.

The integration ecosystem is centered on Java frameworks and standards rather than broad cross-platform use. JCache (JSR-107), Spring Caching, Hibernate, and Java EE Servlet integrations can help fit caching into established application architectures. That focus is an advantage for Java teams already using these technologies, but it also defines the product's limits: it is primarily a Java application library, not a general-purpose cache service for varied languages or managed environments. Choose Ehcache when self-hosted control, persistent tiers, and Java integration matter. Consider a different caching approach when the requirement is a platform-neutral service or a cache managed outside the application stack.

Ehcache pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Heap, off-heap, disk, and three-tier cache configurations
    • JCache compatibility with Spring Caching and Hibernate integration
    • Write-through, write-behind, expiry, eviction, and clustered caching
  • Where it doesn't
    • Primarily focused on Java application caching
    • Self-hosted deployment requires application integration and operations
    • Clustered caching depends on Terracotta-based capabilities
