Eclipse Steady review
A focused, self-hosted SCA tool for Java and Python reachability analysis.

Eclipse Steady is an open-source software composition analysis tool for development organizations using Java and Python applications. It detects known vulnerabilities in open-source dependencies, assesses dependency usage, and examines whether vulnerable code can be reached or executed. Java projects can be scanned through Maven, Gradle, or the CLI, while Python applications use the CLI. Its self-hosted design includes client-side scanners, backend services, web frontends, vulnerability-data management, reporting, and Jenkins automation.
Reachability analysis is the product’s clearest differentiator. Static analysis examines vulnerable-code reachability, while dynamic analysis collects evidence of vulnerable-code execution during tests. Dependency assessment combines code-centric and usage-based approaches, and the tool can propose dependency mitigations. Scan results and vulnerability data are handled through a central backend, with HTML, XML, and JSON reports for communicating findings. Jenkins integration supports automated scans within that environment.
Eclipse Steady fits teams that want an open-source, self-hosted SCA workflow focused on Java and Python rather than broad ecosystem coverage. It is a practical choice when reachability evidence, dependency assessment, mitigation proposals, and report generation matter more than a large integration catalog. Teams working outside Maven, Gradle, pip, or the supported CLI workflows should choose another tool. It also may not suit organizations seeking verified SBOM capabilities or pull-request scanning. The project is identified as version 3.2.5 and an incubator project, while vulnerability-data coverage is limited for 2021 and later.
Eclipse Steady pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Static and dynamic analysis shows whether vulnerable code is reachable or executed.
- Supports Java Maven, Gradle, CLI, and Python pip-based applications.
- Provides mitigation proposals, reports, backend services, and Jenkins automation.
- Where it doesn't
- Supports only Java and Python ecosystems.
- Self-hosted deployment requires managing client, backend, and web components.
- Vulnerability-data coverage is limited for 2021 and later.
