Our verdict on EarthBound Patcher
EarthBound Patcher is a free, open-source desktop utility for creating and applying patches for EarthBound ROMs. It suits players who want to apply EBP or IPS patches, as well as people creating EBP patches to share. The project runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is licensed under GNU GPL v3. Its scope is deliberately game-specific, so it is a focused option rather than a general-purpose ROM editing suite.
Patch handling is its central strength: it creates EBP files and applies both EBP and IPS patches, including IPS patches made with other patchers. It attempts to detect ROM header variations automatically and can identify unconventional ROMs, then patch them to a standard version. Created patches can carry a title, author, and short description, which appear when the patch is opened. That combination makes the tool useful for applying existing work and packaging EarthBound-specific changes with identifying information.
The trade-off is breadth. EarthBound Patcher does not provide tile or sprite editing or a hex editor, so users looking for those capabilities will need a different tool or workflow. It can also be run from source using Python and PyQt5, which may suit technically comfortable users, while the published desktop platforms cover the main operating systems listed. Choose it for EarthBound patch creation and application; choose a broader ROM-hacking tool if you need editing features beyond patch workflows.
