Our verdict on e2guardian

e2guardian is an open-source web content-filtering proxy for teams that want to operate their own gateway on Linux. It suits administrators who need to apply web access policies across different user groups, inspect encrypted traffic, and control downloads without adopting a managed service. It can run in explicit or transparent proxy mode, or as an ICAP server, and is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2.

Its policy controls are a central strength: administrators can create multiple filtering configurations for different groups, authenticate by IP or DNS, and permit, block, or flag domains and URLs using allowlists, blocklists, and greylists. Regular expressions can filter URLs, body content, and headers; header and cookie analysis and manipulation add further rule options. Time-based blocking and temporary bypasses support policies that vary by schedule or circumstance. SSL inspection and a plugin-based content scanner system, including antivirus scanning and support for large downloads, extend filtering beyond simple URL rules.

The deployment model is a meaningful constraint. e2guardian is installed on Linux-based systems, either from source or as a Debian package, and its filtering capabilities depend on teams operating and configuring that infrastructure. It can work with Squid, tinyproxy, and Oops, which may suit environments already using those proxies. Support channels are community and documentation, so teams seeking a managed gateway or vendor support should consider another option. Choose e2guardian when self-hosting and policy control are priorities; look elsewhere if your team needs a hosted service or turnkey operation.
