DXVK is an open-source Vulkan-based translation layer for Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11. It is primarily intended for Linux users running Windows 3D applications and games through Wine, while DXVK Native provides a mode without Wine. Developers can also use the project’s prebuilt DLLs, configuration options, diagnostic tools, and graphics pipeline features when integrating or troubleshooting supported applications.

The ecosystem fit is a major strength. Steam Play, Lutris, Bottles, and Heroic Launcher can automate DXVK setup, while Wine prefix installation uses native DLL overrides. The project includes 32-bit and 64-bit Windows DLL builds, Vulkan device filtering by device name or UUID, configurable logging, diagnostic environment variables, and an on-screen HUD showing frame rate, GPU, driver, and rendering statistics. Shader cache and graphics pipeline library support add further control for Vulkan-based execution.

DXVK is free to use and open source, with no paid tiers to evaluate. Its scope is deliberately focused: it translates Direct3D 8–11 to Vulkan rather than serving as a general compatibility layer for every Windows graphics API. Windows use may work but is not officially supported by the project. Online multiplayer and anti-cheat behavior also varies by game; manipulating Direct3D libraries may be treated as cheating and could result in account bans. Choose DXVK for Linux, Wine, or compatible native workflows that need this translation path; choose an alternative when official Windows support or predictable anti-cheat behavior is essential.
