For Mac users who still watch DVD movies, DVD Player is Apple’s focused macOS app for playback from a built-in or external DVD drive, as well as DVD movie files stored in a VIDEO_TS folder. It provides the core controls—play, pause, volume, rewind, and fast-forward—without trying to serve as a general media library. Its fit is deliberately narrow: choose it when DVD playback is the need, not when you want broader disc or video-format support.

Playback includes access to disc menus and available chapter selection, plus DVD-provided subtitles or closed captions when available. Parental controls and disc authorization are also part of the feature set. These options make the app suited to straightforward viewing of supported DVDs, while the five-change limit on DVD drive region selection is a practical constraint for people switching among discs from different regions. DVD Player does not play Blu-ray discs, and it cannot play copied video folders from copy-protected DVDs.

The app is free, with no paid tier described. Its platform scope is macOS, and its narrow feature set keeps the decision simple: Mac owners who need menus, chapters, and subtitles for DVDs have the relevant playback functions in one desktop app. It is not the right choice for Blu-ray viewing, a general media collection, or copied folders from copy-protected discs. If those are central to your requirements, look for a player built around those needs instead.
