Our verdict on DSVEdit
DSVEdit is a free Windows desktop editor for modifying data in five Castlevania games on Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. It is aimed at solo ROM hackers working with Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, Aria of Sorrow, or Harmony of Dissonance. It extracts game files from ROMs, provides editors for game content, and builds a modified ROM from the edited files.
The editing scope extends beyond rooms and maps. DSVEdit can change tiles, entities, doors, enemy and item properties, graphics, palettes, sprites, player characters, and text. It also covers tilesets, music assignments, shop inventories, chest pools, weapon synthesis, and magic seals. This makes it more suited to editing structured game data in its supported titles than to general-purpose ROM work. For DS games, the supported releases include US and Japanese versions; the GBA support is for US versions.
For review, the editor can launch an emulator to test a modified ROM or a room, keeping a test step close to the editing workflow. Its narrow game coverage is the main trade-off: it is a fit for someone modifying one of the listed Castlevania titles, not a general editor for arbitrary NDS or GBA games. Windows is the supported platform, and documentation is the stated support channel. Choose DSVEdit if its game-specific editors match your project; look elsewhere for broad title coverage, patch-format creation, or a documented hex editor.
