Drone review
A container-focused CI platform with broad runners, repository triggers, and enterprise scaling.

Drone is a continuous integration platform for development teams that need repository-triggered build, test, and release workflows. Pipelines are defined in a .drone.yml file committed with the repository, giving teams a configuration-led approach to continuous integration. It supports web, Linux, Windows, macOS, and self-hosted environments, with integrations for GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud, Bitbucket Server, Gitea, and Gogs. Its strongest fit is for organizations running containerized software and managing CI infrastructure across multiple environments.
The platform’s execution model is its main technical strength. Steps can run in isolated Docker containers, while runner options include Kubernetes, Exec, SSH, VM, DigitalOcean, and MacStadium. Conditional execution can be based on branch, event, reference, repository, status, target, and cron, which supports more selective workflows. Directed-acyclic-graph pipeline parallelism can organize independent work, and plugins and extensions provide additional workflow components. Encrypted and externally managed secrets are also supported, alongside artifact caching and pull request checks.
Drone has a free open-source edition, while the Entry-level Enterprise plan starts at $299 per month with monthly billing. Enterprise Edition adds distributed runners and autoscaling, making it the more relevant option for larger or more variable CI workloads. Infrastructure integrations include Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon S3, MinIO, DigitalOcean Spaces, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite. Choose Drone if repository-managed YAML, container isolation, varied runner environments, and infrastructure control are priorities. Teams seeking a lower-cost paid entry point or a less repository-centered configuration model should consider alternatives.
