DRAKVUF review
A focused open-source engine for tracing activity inside Windows and Linux guests.

DRAKVUF is an open-source, virtualization-based system for agentless black-box analysis of arbitrary binaries and operating-system activity inside virtual machines. It is primarily intended for researchers conducting stealthy malware analysis, while also supporting observation of firmware, OS kernels, and userspace processes. Its focus is technical depth rather than a broad, managed sandbox service: DRAKVUF uses Xen and Intel VT-x/EPT hardware virtualization and provides command-line tools and plugins for selected Windows and Linux guests.
The feature set covers several layers of guest activity. Agentless execution tracing applies to arbitrary binaries, with binary execution supported in Windows and Linux guests. Windows guests also support agentless file insertion. Monitoring includes Windows and Linux kernel functions, Windows userspace activity, heap allocations, file access, deleted-file extraction from memory, and TCP and UDP connections. Guest multi-vCPU support adds coverage for virtual machines with more than one virtual processor. This breadth makes DRAKVUF a strong fit when analysis requires low-level visibility across execution, memory, storage, and networking rather than only process-level output.
DRAKVUF is delivered as a self-hosted analysis engine, with API and command-line access and an open-source pricing model. That deployment model suits teams able to manage Linux infrastructure, virtualization requirements, guest images, and analysis workflows directly. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a hosted sandbox, a turnkey web console, or broad platform coverage from one product. The separately maintained DRAKVUF Sandbox project adds a web interface and snapshot-based workflow, but teams choosing DRAKVUF itself should expect an engine-and-plugin approach. Pick it for agentless guest tracing and detailed research workflows; choose an alternative when managed delivery or a wider operating-system ecosystem matters more.
DRAKVUF pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Agentless tracing covers binaries, kernels, userspace, files, memory, and networks.
- Supports guest multi-vCPU environments and Windows and Linux guests.
- Open-source, self-hosted deployment with command-line tools and plugins.
- Where it doesn't
- Deployment is verified on Linux and requires a self-hosted environment.
- Guest support is limited to selected Windows and Linux operating systems.
- The web interface and snapshot workflow belong to the separate DRAKVUF Sandbox project.
