Dogtag Certificate System is an open-source certificate authority and PKI lifecycle management system for organizations running their own certificate infrastructure. It is designed for Linux-based, self-hosted environments and supports API access. The suite is a fit for teams that need control over certificate issuance, revocation, enrollment protocols, status checking and related PKI operations without adopting a proprietary hosted service. Its free, open-source model also suits organizations that can operate and maintain the underlying platform.
The product’s scope extends well beyond basic certificate issuance. It supports certificate retrieval and revocation, Certificate Revocation List generation and publishing, certificate profiles, SCEP, key archival and recovery, smartcard lifecycle management, and an OCSP responder. It also includes ACME and EST responders, giving teams multiple enrollment and service options. Integration with 389 Directory Server and hardware security modules helps it fit environments with directory-backed identity services or protected key storage. This breadth makes Dogtag a practical choice for teams building a complete PKI stack rather than looking only for certificate inventory or a narrow issuance tool.
Dogtag is less suitable for teams seeking a managed certificate platform with minimal operational responsibility. The self-hosted model places deployment, administration and lifecycle processes with the adopting organization, and automatic discovery, renewal and deployment automation are not part of the verified positioning. Smaller teams may also find the range of subsystems—CA, KRA, OCSP, TKS, TPS, ACME and EST—broader than their immediate needs. Choose Dogtag when open-source control, Linux deployment and PKI depth matter most; consider a more automated alternative when reducing day-to-day certificate operations is the priority.
