Doctrine DBAL QueryBuilder is a PHP library for constructing SQL through a fluent API, and it can be used independently of Doctrine ORM. It is suited to PHP developers who want a standalone way to assemble queries before execution, including teams working across different database systems. The builder produces SQL text rather than executing queries, so it fits applications that need to control how and when database operations run.

Its feature set covers SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements, with WHERE, grouping, HAVING, joins, ordering, result limits and offsets. It also supports UNION queries and common table expressions. Named or positional placeholders let developers bind values, while expression helpers cover comparisons and nested conditions. These capabilities make the builder useful for composing both routine queries and more involved SQL; raw SQL remains an available escape hatch. Query compilation provides the SQL text for the application to use, but the library itself is not an asynchronous query runner.

Database platform abstraction is a central reason to consider DBAL QueryBuilder: it can generate vendor-specific SQL for MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, IBM Db2 and SQLite. That breadth may suit PHP projects that need to target more than one of these systems. The trade-off is that the product has no type safety or async query support, and deployment is self-hosted with community support. It is a reasonable fit for teams seeking a free, open-source SQL construction library; projects that require type-safe queries, asynchronous execution or a different support model should look elsewhere.

    • Binds named or positional parameters and compiles queries to SQL text
    • Abstracts SQL generation across seven database platforms
  • Where it doesn't
    • Offers no type safety
    • Does not support asynchronous queries
    • Uses self-hosted deployment with community support
