DNScaster review
Rule-based geographic DNS routing with monitoring and primary/secondary failover.

DNScaster is a managed authoritative DNS service for teams directing users among multiple server endpoints. Its routing can return the 1–3 nearest servers or tailor DNS responses by geographic region and IP block. That makes it relevant to teams that need location-based traffic rules alongside endpoint monitoring, rather than only basic domain and host record management. The service is offered for web and API use, with cloud deployment.
Monitoring and failover are central to its operational value. DNScaster can hide records for offline hosts and restore them when they recover, while primary/secondary records provide automatic backup routing. It also supports ALIAS records that publish A and AAAA records based on another domain, plus automatic registrar delegation and glue-record updates. A RESTful JSON API supports DNS automation. These capabilities suit teams managing multiple endpoints or automating DNS changes; teams seeking a narrow DNS setup without geographic rules may not need this breadth.
Plans are billed monthly. NS Duo costs $58 per month and includes two nameservers in cities of choice and 10 monitors. NS Trio costs $87 per month for three nameservers and 15 monitors; NS Quad costs $116 per month for four nameservers and 20 monitors. A seven-day free trial is available, and no card is required for the trial. Published plan information says allowances cover domains, queries, and monitors; each nameserver instance has a target capacity of at least 100 million queries per month, though actual throughput can vary. Choose DNScaster if geographic or IP-boundary routing and health-based failover justify a paid managed DNS service. Consider alternatives if price is the priority or you need a documented broader integration ecosystem.
DNScaster pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Routes to the 1–3 nearest servers or by geographic and IP boundaries
- Monitoring hides offline-host records and restores them after recovery
- RESTful JSON API, registrar updates, and primary/secondary failover
- Where it doesn't
- Starts at $58 per month, with no free plan
- More nameservers and monitors require higher-priced plans
- Supplied integration detail is limited to registrar integration
