Our verdict on Dixl Messenger
Dixl Messenger is a mobile messaging and calling app for individuals and teams who want encrypted conversations on iOS or Android. It offers end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls, including group calls, alongside encrypted messaging and file sharing. The vendor describes the app as free, without ads or subscriptions, and its clients as open source. Linked tablets extend use across mobile devices, but the published platform scope does not include desktop or web clients, so it is not suited to people who need a computer-based calling option.
Calls are the strongest fit for buyers comparing encrypted calling apps: Dixl includes adaptive call quality for weak networks, proxy support, and an optional relay that hides the user's IP during calls. Messaging features add group-chat admin controls, mentions, quoted replies, disappearing-message timers, screen lock, and control over phone-number discoverability. These give small groups useful privacy and moderation options without changing the app's mobile focus. Phone-number registration may be a drawback for people who prefer accounts that do not depend on a number.
The app's free pricing and open-source clients make it worth considering for solo users and small teams who want encrypted mobile calls and chats without a subscription. The listed compliance posture includes GDPR, and documentation is the listed support channel. There is no self-hosting option, and the stated product scope is mobile rather than desktop or web. Choose Dixl if encrypted mobile calling, group conversations, and relay-based IP hiding matter most; look elsewhere if your work depends on desktop access, self-hosting, or broader platform coverage.
