Disk Inventory X review
A free, open-source Mac utility for visualizing storage use by folder and file kind.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Disk Inventory X is a free, GPL-licensed macOS utility for understanding how storage is distributed across files and folders. Its treemap visualization gives larger areas to larger items, while synchronized hierarchy, treemap, and file-kind views provide several ways to examine the same storage layout. It suits Mac users who want a visual disk audit, including people investigating large folders, reviewing mounted volumes, or locating files by kind.
Its standout feature is the combination of treemap exploration and file-kind analysis. Sortable file-kind statistics show how storage is divided by type, and a selection list can display files of a chosen kind or all kinds. Search within that list narrows the view, while the inspector provides detailed information about a selected file or folder. Folder zooming and refresh operations support focused exploration, and selected files or folders can be moved to Trash.
Disk Inventory X keeps its scope narrow: storage visualization and inspection on macOS. It can scan folders and mounted volumes, but it does not extend to cross-platform use or AI-assisted analysis. The original project lists version 1.3 for macOS 10.13–10.15, while a separate community revival provides Disk Inventory Xs for Apple Silicon Macs. Choose it if you want free, open-source, visual disk analysis on a Mac. Consider an alternative if you need broader platform coverage, report-oriented workflows, or installed-application size reporting.
