Our verdict on DIRECTV STREAM

DIRECTV STREAM delivers live television over an internet connection, without requiring a satellite dish. Its channel packages and smaller themed Genre Packs give viewers options ranging from kids programming to broad entertainment and sports lineups. It is aimed at people who want live TV, local broadcasts where available, and cloud DVR, with viewing through the DIRECTV app on compatible TVs and streaming devices, phones, tablets, and web browsers. The service is offered in the United States, and local coverage and channel availability vary by market and package.

The package range is the main buying decision. MyKids Genre Pack includes 10+ kids channels. ENTERTAINMENT provides 90+ channels, local channels where available, and unlimited cloud DVR recording. CHOICE moves up to 125+ channels and adds specialty sports and regional sports networks; ULTIMATE offers 160+ channels, including sports and movie channels. These tiers make sense for households that want to choose a channel mix, but the published plan details do not establish that every channel is available in every market. A five-day trial offers a short period to assess the service, and a card is required for the trial.

DVR and viewing access are useful strengths, with an important distinction for people who watch away from home: up to three concurrent streams are supported off the home network, while streams at home are unlimited. The cloud DVR is described as unlimited, and the service also supports live and recorded viewing through the DIRECTV app. Choose DIRECTV STREAM if you want traditional live-TV packages, broad channel choices, and DVR in an internet-delivered service. It may be a poorer fit if your priority is unrestricted away-from-home streaming or if you need certainty that a particular local channel or regional sports network is available in your area; check package and market availability before choosing.
