Our verdict on ABEMA

ABEMA is a Japanese internet streaming service for viewers seeking live channels and on-demand programming across news, sports, anime, dramas, movies, variety and music. Its free viewing model suits people who want Japanese entertainment without a paid channel subscription. Programs can be watched on web browsers, Windows and macOS computers, iOS and Android devices, plus supported televisions and streaming devices. ABEMA is designed for individual and small-scale use rather than a conventional local-broadcast replacement.

The published plans show a freemium structure. Free channel viewing is available without a paid channel subscription, while ABEMA Premium plans add access to ABEMA Premium exclusive content. The supplied pricing information identifies ¥680 as the cheapest paid tier after the April 1, 2026 price change. Because the service runs across web, desktop, mobile and supported TV or streaming-device platforms, it can fit households that switch between screens. Program reminders, My List catch-up for eligible shows and catch-up playback while eligible programs are still airing add viewing flexibility.

ABEMA’s strongest distinction is its combination of continuous live internet channels and broad on-demand viewing, with comments on live programs and channel switching on supported devices. Premium also adds offline video downloads, which benefits viewers who want to watch selected programs without an active connection. The service should suit viewers focused on Japanese online programming, anime, dramas, variety, music or general news and sports. Choose another service if access to terrestrial, BS or CS local broadcast channels is essential, or if every program must support catch-up playback; ABEMA limits those functions to eligible content.
