Our verdict on Dino

Dino is a free, open-source desktop chat client for the decentralized Jabber/XMPP network. It suits Linux users who want encrypted direct conversations, private group chats, public channels, file sharing, and calls without relying on a single hosted messaging network. Multiple accounts can be managed in one interface, while message reactions, replies, search, filtering, and notification controls cover everyday chat needs. The product is particularly well suited to people already using XMPP or looking for an open-source client built around that ecosystem.

Its strongest distinction is the combination of protocol support and privacy features. OMEMO and OpenPGP provide end-to-end encryption, with OMEMO enabled by default in version 0.5. Dino also supports encrypted audio and video calls, including group calls, using peer-to-peer connections where possible. XMPP interoperability allows conversations across compatible clients, while public channels and private groups give the app more range than a narrowly focused one-to-one messenger. The interface also supports image and file sharing, search, and multiple accounts without leaving the desktop client.

The main trade-off is platform coverage: the project documents Linux availability, so Dino is a focused choice rather than a broad multi-platform messenger. Its experience is also shaped by XMPP and related standards, including OMEMO and OpenPGP, which makes protocol compatibility central to how it fits into a messaging setup. Choose Dino if Linux support, open-source software, decentralized messaging, and encrypted calls matter more than reach across operating systems. Choose another app if your priority is a single service designed for users across a wider range of platforms.
