DigitalOcean Load Balancers is a managed service for distributing HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, and UDP traffic across DigitalOcean Droplets, Kubernetes, Containers, or regional load balancers. It is aimed at teams running applications on DigitalOcean that need regional balancing, cross-region traffic distribution, or transport-layer routing without managing the load-balancing infrastructure themselves. Control Panel and API management support both web-based administration and programmatic workflows.

The published plans cover three deployment patterns. Regional HTTP Load Balancer costs $12 per node per month and supports HTTP/HTTPS traffic, SSL termination and passthrough, up to 10,000 requests per second per node, and up to 10,000 simultaneous connections per node. Regional Network Load Balancer costs $15 per node per month and adds TCP and UDP traffic, transport-layer routing, and 50 Mbps of additional ingress throughput per node. Global Load Balancer costs $15 per month and routes traffic across regions, with 25 million HTTP/HTTPS requests, 1 TB of data transfer, and up to five connected domains per month.

Operationally, the service includes health checks, automatic backend rotation, configurable forwarding rules and ports, sticky sessions, HTTP/3 support, and managed Let’s Encrypt certificates. Its integrations with DigitalOcean infrastructure and the DigitalOcean API make it a focused fit for deployments already inside that ecosystem. The main boundary is routing depth: regional load balancers do not support URL-, cookie-, or header-based backend routing, so teams requiring application-aware Layer 7 rules should consider an alternative. Choose DigitalOcean Load Balancers for straightforward managed regional or global balancing on DigitalOcean; avoid it when advanced content-based routing is central to the architecture.

DigitalOcean Load Balancers pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Regional HTTP, TCP, and UDP load balancing
    • Health checks, automatic backend rotation, and sticky sessions
    • SSL termination, passthrough, and managed Let’s Encrypt certificates
  • Where it doesn't
    • No URL-, cookie-, or header-based backend routing
    • No free plan; regional pricing starts at $12 per node monthly
    • Global plan limits usage to 25 million requests and 1 TB monthly
