DigitalOcean Functions review
A low-cost, straightforward choice for serverless functions on DigitalOcean.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
DigitalOcean Functions provides on-demand serverless execution without server management. It is aimed at developers who want straightforward functions for web events, HTTP endpoints, scheduled jobs, or backend tasks, particularly within the DigitalOcean ecosystem. Functions can scale automatically based on demand and support Node.js, Python, Go, and PHP. Developers can create and test functions in the control panel or locally, then deploy with doctl or as components of DigitalOcean App Platform applications.
Pricing follows a freemium, usage-based model. The free allowance includes 90,000 GiB-seconds of compute per month per account. Beyond that allowance, usage is metered by allocated memory and execution time, with additional memory and runtime billed through the usage-based plan. This structure suits small workloads and early projects that can remain within the included allowance, while still providing a path for variable demand. Configurable timeout and memory limits give teams control over how functions consume resources.
The platform fits best when the surrounding application already uses DigitalOcean App Platform, Managed Databases, GitHub, or GitLab. API access supports namespace and function management, while cron syntax handles scheduled triggers. App Platform deployments can use custom domains and pull-request preview deployments; standalone Functions use namespace-generated endpoints. Choose DigitalOcean Functions for focused, cost-conscious serverless workloads and simple deployment paths. Teams needing a broader integration ecosystem or a wider runtime selection should consider an alternative.
