DigitalOcean Droplets provide Linux-based virtual machines for developers, startups, and small-to-medium-sized businesses. Users can choose shared or dedicated CPU instances, select a datacenter region, install Linux distributions or 1-Click Apps, and manage workloads through the control panel, CLI, API, or Terraform Provider. Supported use cases include websites, web applications, development environments, databases, CI/CD pipelines, VPNs, proxies, and game servers. The service is a practical fit for teams that want configurable VMs without a broad infrastructure stack.

Pricing is structured around five monthly plans. Basic costs $4 per month and includes a shared CPU, 1 vCPU, 512 MiB memory, 10 GiB SSD, and 500 GiB transfer. CPU-Optimized costs $42 per month with a dedicated CPU, 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB memory, 25 GiB SSD, and 4,000 GiB transfer. General Purpose costs $63 per month and adds 8 GiB memory, while Memory-Optimized costs $84 per month with 16 GiB memory and 50 GiB SSD. Storage-Optimized costs $131 per month with 16 GiB memory and 300 GiB SSD. There is no free plan.

Beyond the VM itself, Droplets connect with DigitalOcean Spaces Object Storage, Volumes Block Storage, Managed Load Balancers, Cloud Firewalls, Reserved IPs, Managed Databases, autoscale pools, and Terraform Provider. Features include private VPC-only networking, attachable SSD block storage, snapshots, automated backups, monitoring, and alerting. Autoscale pools can use utilization or fixed-size rules. The 13-region footprint may be less suitable for workloads requiring wider geographic distribution. Small teams should pick Droplets for straightforward application hosting and configurable infrastructure; teams needing broader regional coverage should consider another cloud platform.
