dbt Semantic Layer is a cloud product for data teams that define semantic models and metrics as code alongside dbt models. It is aimed at dbt teams that need consistent metric definitions across dashboards, embedded analytics, notebooks, spreadsheets, and AI systems. Definitions are written in YAML, with version control and lineage awareness built into the workflow. MetricFlow generates SQL for metric queries, supports dimensions and joins across semantic models, and exposes results through query APIs and downstream integrations.

Pricing is packaged within dbt’s hosted platform plans rather than presented as a separate standalone product. The Developer plan includes a browser-based IDE and one project, while API access is not listed for that tier. Starter adds the ability to define and query metrics with dbt Semantic Layer, basic Semantic Layer functionality, and API access at $100 USD per user per month, billed monthly. Enterprise adds governed metrics with caching, SSO, role-based access control, SCIM provisioning, and priority support with SLAs. Enterprise+ adds PrivateLink, IP restrictions, and Hybrid Projects. The free Developer option gives teams a lower-commitment way to work with the product before choosing a paid plan.

Its ecosystem fit is a central strength. The product provides JDBC and GraphQL query APIs and lists integrations with Google Sheets, Hex, Lightdash, Mode, Preset, Sigma, Tableau, ThoughtSpot, and Dot. It also supports caching for common queries on eligible plans and connects semantic definitions to analytics and AI workflows. Choose dbt Semantic Layer when metric governance, lineage, automatic joins, and dbt-centered development matter more than a standalone semantic tool. Teams seeking API access, caching, or enterprise identity and networking controls should evaluate the applicable paid tier before selecting it.
