Databricks SQL Warehouse review
A usage-based SQL warehouse for governed lakehouse analytics and BI workflows.

Databricks SQL Warehouse is a cloud data warehousing service for analysts and data teams that query data in cloud data lakes with SQL. It combines AI-assisted SQL authoring, serverless SQL warehouses with elastic compute, interactive AI/BI dashboards, scheduled jobs, alerts, incremental processing, governance, federation, and REST APIs. Its audience is lakehouse teams that need SQL access to governed data alongside analytics workflows and business intelligence connectivity.
The published plans use usage-based billing. Pay as you go offers per-second granularity and no upfront costs, while Committed Use Contracts may provide discounts and other benefits for committed usage. There is no free plan, and budgeting depends on workload, cloud provider, region, contract, and workspace tier. Teams comparing tools on a fixed subscription price should weigh that model carefully; Databricks SQL Warehouse is a stronger fit when variable consumption or committed usage aligns with procurement needs.
Its breadth is the main differentiator. Unity Catalog provides governance and access controls, Lakehouse Federation supports queries across external data systems, and the REST API supports SQL object automation. BI connectivity covers Power BI, Tableau, Looker, Sigma, Qlik, and ThoughtSpot, while integrations also include dbt, Fivetran, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse, and Google BigQuery. Streaming tables and materialized views support incremental ETL. Choose it for a cloud lakehouse environment that needs governed SQL, elastic compute, and connected analytics; choose another tool if a free plan or simpler fixed-price model is the priority.
