Our verdict on Damask
Damask is an open-source, self-hosted digital asset management application for creative studios and technical teams. It organizes images, video, audio, PDFs, and documents through projects, folders, collections, search, pagination, bulk tagging, bulk moving, and controlled-vocabulary tags. Custom metadata fields can be applied to assets and projects, while EXIF and audio/video metadata extraction adds detail during ingestion. API access, web access, and self-hosted deployment support teams that want control over their asset environment.
Its strongest area is asset handling depth. Damask provides version history with non-destructive rollback and deduplication, visual similarity search for images, and processing for multiple media types. Optional OCR and background removal extend the processing toolkit. Workflow automation and configurable ingestion sources support recurring intake from SFTP, WebDAV, S3-compatible storage, IMAP, email, and other connected services. Integrations also include OIDC, Google OAuth, Canva OAuth, Google Drive, Canva, ImageRouter, and an email API, giving technical teams several ways to connect identity, storage, design, and intake workflows.
Sharing and review are covered through password-protected, expiring links and public client commenting without an account. That can simplify external feedback, while teams handling sensitive review cycles may prefer tighter control over comment access. The self-hosted model is a good fit for organizations that want open-source software and are prepared to manage deployment and infrastructure. Damask is less suited to buyers seeking a vendor-hosted DAM with a conventional paid-plan structure or teams that need a clearly established approval workflow. Choose it for technical control, flexible ingestion, and broad asset processing; consider an alternative when managed hosting or formalized approvals are central requirements.
