Our verdict on Dakota

Dakota is an open-source software toolkit from Sandia National Laboratories for exploring designs and analyzing computational models. Its methods cover optimization, uncertainty quantification, parameter estimation, sensitivity analysis, and design of experiments. That makes it a fit for analysts who need to study or optimize model behavior, especially in mid-market and enterprise settings. It is not a generative CAD tool: its documented focus is computational analysis, rather than creating geometry.

The toolkit's breadth is a central strength. It includes gradient-based and derivative-free optimization, surrogate-based optimization, sampling and reliability methods for uncertainty quantification, nonlinear least-squares parameter estimation, and variance analysis. Design-of-experiments methods and parameter studies support structured exploration, while interfaces connect analysis codes to iterative systems-analysis methods. A Python interfacing module is also available. These capabilities suit teams that can bring their own computational models and want a range of analysis approaches; they are less suitable for buyers whose main requirement is geometry generation.

Dakota is distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License for versions 5.0 and newer, and is publicly downloadable. Pre-built binaries are available for macOS, Windows, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux; other platforms can build from source. It can be self-hosted, with community support and documentation. Choose Dakota when open-source optimization and uncertainty tools, code interfacing, and platform flexibility matter. Look elsewhere if you need a generative design product centered on CAD geometry or a commercially priced vendor support offering.
