Our verdict on Curvenote
Curvenote is a cloud-based writing and publishing platform for scientists, researchers, lab groups, journals, and research institutions. Its editor brings collaborative writing, inline comments and suggestions, citations, equations, interactive figures, and versioning into one research-focused workspace. Researchers can publish papers as websites and export work to PDF, Word, LaTeX, Typst, MyST Markdown, and Jupyter Book. A command-line interface also supports local technical writing, content synchronization, website creation, and static-document export.
Pricing is structured around individual and team use. The Individual Researcher plan is free per month and includes unlimited articles, interactive figures, full Jupyter integration, built-in LaTeX editing, PDF and Word export, and website publishing. Pro costs $9 USD per month on monthly billing and adds professional templates, unlimited private projects, and dedicated support. Lab costs $15 USD per user per month on monthly billing, includes everything in Pro, and adds team administration. This makes the free plan a substantial starting point for individual researchers, while Pro and Lab address privacy, support, and team-management needs.
Its strongest fit is research publishing that depends on structured citations, equations, data-driven figures, and reproducible workflows. Integrations include Jupyter, GitHub, DOI, Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, Crossref, ORCID, Google Scholar, PubMedCentral, BinderHub, and Sphinx Documentation, among others. Real-time collaboration and independent versioning add control for evolving papers and lab projects. Curvenote is less suitable for general-purpose writing, mobile-first work, or teams seeking open-source software: deployment is cloud-based, mobile apps are not listed, and the product is not open source. Researchers and research groups should choose it when publishing workflows matter more than broad consumer-writing features.
