crun is an open-source OCI container runtime and C library for running Linux containers. It fits teams and platforms that need a focused runtime layer rather than a complete image-building or image-management engine. Its scope covers creating, starting, executing, listing, pausing, checkpointing, restoring, and deleting containers, with rootless configuration support for environments that do not require root privileges.

Its feature depth is strongest around runtime control. crun supports cgroupfs and systemd cgroup management, container resource constraint updates, SELinux and AppArmor process profiles, and checkpoint and restore through CRIU. Optional WebAssembly/WASI workload execution extends the runtime beyond standard Linux container processes, while libcrun provides C library integration. These capabilities make crun suitable for container engines and orchestration components that need configurable lifecycle and resource management.

Integration is a central part of crun's role. It works with Podman, CRI-O, and containerd, and the documented CRI-related fit comes through those integrations rather than through crun implementing the Kubernetes Container Runtime Interface itself. crun is free and open source, with Linux as its supported platform. Choose it when you need a lightweight OCI runtime with rootless operation, cgroup controls, security profile support, or checkpoint and restore. Choose a broader container engine instead when image creation or image management is part of the requirement, or when Windows container support is needed.

crun pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Runs OCI-format Linux containers with rootless operation
    • Supports lifecycle management, checkpoint/restore, and resource updates
    • Integrates with Podman, CRI-O, and containerd
  • Where it doesn't
    • Linux-only platform support
    • Does not build or manage container images
    • Is not itself a Kubernetes CRI implementation
