CRI-O review
A focused, open-source runtime layer for Kubernetes—not an image-building tool.

CRI-O is an open-source container runtime for Kubernetes environments. It implements the Kubernetes Container Runtime Interface (CRI), connecting kubelet with OCI-compatible runtimes such as runc and crun. The project manages image pulling, registry integration, container layers, filesystem storage, pod networking through CNI, and container monitoring through conmon. It is aimed at teams operating Kubernetes clusters that want a focused runtime layer on Linux rather than a general-purpose container management CLI.
Its strongest fit is the surrounding Kubernetes and OCI ecosystem. CRI-O supports OCI and Docker image formats and integrates with Kubernetes, containers/image, containers/storage, conmon, CNI, systemd, runc, crun, and Kata Containers. The published capabilities also include rootless mode, HTTP status APIs, metrics, tracing, logging, and exit-code handling. Security-related controls cover SELinux, seccomp, capabilities, and other OCI security settings. This combination suits cluster operators who want runtime, storage, networking, observability, and security functions aligned with Kubernetes operations.
CRI-O is intentionally narrow in scope. Its project documentation excludes image building, signing, and pushing, so teams needing an end-to-end image workflow should pair it with separate tooling or choose a product that includes those functions. It is available for Linux distributions including Debian, Raspbian, Ubuntu, Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, openSUSE, and Flatcar, with an API platform option. Choose CRI-O when Kubernetes CRI compatibility and OCI runtime integration are the priority; choose an alternative when standalone container management or integrated image creation is central to the workflow.
CRI-O pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Implements Kubernetes CRI with OCI and Docker image support
- Supports runc, crun, Kata Containers, CNI, and systemd
- Includes security controls, metrics, tracing, and monitoring support
- Where it doesn't
- Does not build, sign, or push container images
- Focused on Kubernetes runtime operations rather than standalone management
- Requires Kubernetes and related runtime components for its intended role
