Our verdict on CounselOS

CounselOS is a web-based practice-management platform for Australian law firms, covering matter and client management, documents, time recording, billing, trust accounting, compliance dates and client-portal workflows. Its Solo, Small, Mid and Enterprise plans are positioned for firms from sole practitioners to larger teams, while a per-matter option includes the Solo tier without a minimum or fee-earner caps. Firms moving from FilePro or LawMaster can also use the platform's migration tooling.

Trust workflows are a central strength. CounselOS supports trust receipts, payments, transfers, authorisations and reconciliation, with approval controls and audit logging around trust movements. The compliance calendar covers limitation dates, practising certificates, CPD and costs disclosure. Client portals can handle matter updates, documents, invoices and enabled online payments, while billing entries can be recorded and approved. Portal payments, bank feeds, e-sign and office-accounting connections are enabled per firm after onboarding, so buyers should clarify the required configuration before committing. Integrations include Xero, MYOB, OneDrive, SharePoint, Lexis and Jade.

The AI layer is governed rather than presented as an unsupervised replacement for legal review. Features include drafting, legal research, contract review, billing narratives and client updates, with approval inboxes for AI drafts, time entries, trust movements and portal uploads. Small adds a client portal, knowledge-base and precedent-import features plus Australian support; Mid adds custom workflows, business development insights, optional immigration and OMARA capabilities, single sign-on and priority migration support; Enterprise adds a dedicated Australian success manager, custom AI policy templates and an audit-export SLA. CounselOS suits firms that need Australian trust governance alongside broader practice operations. Firms wanting a non-web deployment, simpler scheduling-focused software or payment methods beyond the enabled portal workflow should consider alternatives.
