Our verdict on CoreEQ
CoreEQ is an open-source menu bar equalizer for macOS. It processes audio across multiple applications through Apple’s Core Audio process-tap API, making it suited to Mac users who want system-wide equalization rather than controls limited to one player. Its feature set covers both a graphic equalizer with 11 fixed frequency bands and a parametric equalizer with up to 16 bands, along with per-output-device settings for different listening hardware.
The strongest part of CoreEQ is its combination of adjustment depth and visual feedback. A live frequency-response graph and real-time spectrum analyzer help users see how changes affect the audio signal. Built-in and user-managed presets support repeatable configurations, while automatic gain control can help manage level changes. A/B comparison lets users compare working states, and menu bar controls keep the main controls close at hand.
CoreEQ requires macOS 14.2 or later and permission to record system audio. The project states that audio is not recorded, stored, or transmitted, but it is currently unsigned and unnotarized. Per-output settings are useful for device-specific tuning, while the absence of per-app controls makes it less suitable for users who need separate equalization by application. Choose CoreEQ for free, open-source, system-wide EQ on a compatible Mac; choose another option if per-app profiles or a signed and notarized installation are priorities.
