Our verdict on CookTrace
CookTrace is a recipe manager for people who want to organize recipes and cooking records on their own hardware. It combines a recipe library with cooking mode and live scaling, plus cookbooks, a cook diary, pantry inventory, meal planning, and shopping lists. The product is open source under AGPL-3.0, and the maintainers state that self-hosting is free with no paid tier. Its mix of cooking and household organization is suited to solo cooks and small households who prefer to manage their own deployment rather than rely on a hosted service.
The import options are a notable part of its scope: recipes can come from URLs, files, pasted text, photos, or bulk archives. Once added, recipes can be organized into cookbooks and used in meal plans, with lists available in calendar and list views. Shopping lists can be generated from recipes or meal plans. Pantry tracking adds barcode scanning and expiration digests, while the cook diary records cooking attempts. Open Food Facts and USDA are named integrations. This makes CookTrace broader than a recipe box, though buyers seeking only a simple recipe-saving tool may not need its planning and pantry features.
Deployment is the main trade-off. CookTrace runs in a Docker container and provides a browser-based progressive web app and an Android app; it can also be self-hosted. That approach fits people comfortable maintaining their own instance, but is less suitable for someone who wants a conventional hosted app with minimal setup. Documentation and community are the listed support channels. An optional AI assistant offers cooking-focused tools, but the core appeal is the locally managed collection and connected cooking workflow. Choose CookTrace if self-hosting, recipe imports, and pantry-to-meal planning matter; consider another option if you want a managed service or broader platform availability.
