Our verdict on Compressor

Compressor is Apple’s Mac-only video encoding and delivery app, aimed at people who need control over exports, especially in Final Cut Pro or Motion workflows. It can also encode batches of files or projects, so it has a role beyond those editing applications. For Mac users who regularly prepare video for different destinations or formats, its appeal is in combining custom encoding with repeatable processing options. It is a poor fit for Windows users or anyone seeking a free converter.

The workflow tools go beyond choosing an output format file by file. Watch folders can automatically encode videos added to them, while droplets allow drag-and-drop encoding. Batch processing handles multiple files or projects, and distributed encoding can spread work across multiple Macs. Custom settings cover HDR, HEVC, MXF, and spatial or 360-degree video; supported output formats include MPEG-2, H.264, HEVC, QuickTime, and MXF. Apple documents hardware acceleration for H.264 and HEVC encoding, with output up to 8K. Captions and audio descriptions are available in supported output formats. These options suit users managing varied or recurring exports more than those who only need occasional format changes.

Compressor is sold as a one-time $49.99 purchase, with no free plan. That makes the cost straightforward, but it is an upfront payment for a desktop app restricted to macOS. Final Cut Pro and Motion integration makes it a natural candidate for users already working in those applications; its encoding and automation features may also matter to Mac video workflows outside them. Choose another converter if you need Windows support or a free option. For straightforward, infrequent conversions, Compressor’s specialized controls and workflow features may not justify buying a separate app.
